The Ranjan lab is investigating the phenylpropanoid pathway in Glycine max and its role in resistance and susceptibility.

Life Cycle

Apothecia, the cup-like fruiting bodies of Sclerotinium sclerotiorum, will produce and release infectious ascospores into the air.

Ascospores infect the plant through the flowers. Lesions form along the fungi's path, sometimes accompanied by an unidentified red pigment.

Eventually white mold forms on the exterior of the plant, beginning with the petiole of the flower that was infected, then spreading through the main stem.

Sclerotia will form inside the stem and in more severe cases, externally as well. The sclerotia end up in the soil and germinate apothecia to begin a new infection cycle.
